Panama, officially the Republic of Panama, is a sovereign state in Central America. It is bordered by Costa Rica to the west, Colombia to the southeast, the Caribbean Sea to the north, and the Pacific Ocean to the south.[1]
History
In 1671, British buccaneer Henry Morgan violated the Treaty of Madrid which had ended the Anglo-Spanish War, by capturing Panama City, looting it[2] and burning it to the ground,[3] in the process claiming the lives of a thousand Spanish soldiers.[2] Dutch buccaneer Laurens Prins[4] played a pivotal role during the raid, for which he was roundly celebrated.[5][6]
By 1739, the British and Spain were once again in conflict, and, starting in 1741, Lawrence Washington saw action in expedition against a number of Spanish colonies, including Panama.[7]
In 2013, the city of Portobelo was used as a simulated location created by Abstergo Industries' entertainment branch, for the console stage of their Animus technology.[8]
