The pain grenade is a non-lethal deterrent device that upon activation emits a strong pulse of microwave energy that melts off the top layer of skin of anyone within the small radius where thrown. In 2016, the Assassin Griffin had a few pain grenades in his hideout and would later explain their functionality to the teenagers Owen Meyers and Javier Mondragón.[1]
Description
With a size and appearance comparable to a slim cylindrical canister, the pain grenade could be easily misidentified as something else.[1] Something Owen took advantage of when he made a dummy grenade out of a soda can.[2]
History
In October 2016, while preparing to rescue a group of teenagers trapped in the Abstergo Industries facility known as the Aerie, Javier Mondragón grabbed a pain grenade after Griffin told him what it was and how to use it.[1] Together, Javier and his friend Owen infiltrated the Aerie, where Javier would use said grenade to incapacitate several Abstergo guards while Owen blinded remaining ones with a laser array. They later reunited with Sebastian Monroe, but all three were soon captured by the Instruments of the First Will member and Templar defector Isaiah and his Abstergo forces.[3]
After being confined alongside his friend, Grace Collins, Owen made a makeshift dummy pain grenade as a bluff to escape past the guards. Although the Templar Cole saw through the ruse, she nonetheless helped Owen, Grace, and Monroe escape and took the fake grenade, which she later showed to Isaiah while explaining how the prisoners had fled.[2]
