In 1487, Piri Reis and his uncle joined the Navy, after they served as privateers in the Mediterranean Sea a few years later.[2]
Ottoman-Venetian War
The Republic of Venice under Agostino Barbarigo started the second war with the Empire. At the Battle of Zonchio in 1499, the Navy destroyed the Venetian Navy, causing the Empire to seize the Venetian territories of Lepanto, Modone and Corone in Greece.[3] At the next year of the Battle of Modon, the Ottoman Navy defeated the Venetian Navy again.[4]
