Operation Barbarossa was the invasion of the Soviet Union by Nazi Germany and its allies starting on 1941. The operation, code-named after the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick Barbarossa, marked an escalation in World War II, bringing the Soviet Union into the Allied powers.[1] Nazi soldiers looted countless artwork and precious artifacts, most famously stripping the Amber Room in Catherine Palace of its amber panels and shipping them to Königsberg, Prussia[2] after the city of Pushkin was caught in the nearby siege of Saint Petersburg.[3]
