Oedipous was a king of Thebes in Greek mythology. The son of King Laios, Oedipous ended up inadvertently killing his own father and marrying his own mother, Jocasta, a fate that had been foretold at his birth by the Oracle of Delphi.
Oedipous also met the Sphinx, and answered correctly her riddle.
Influence and legacy
The story of Oedipous and his life lived on long after his death. During the 5th century BCE a region in Boeotia containing the city of Thebes was named after Oedipous as Cursed Land of Oedipous, believed to have been his homeland.[1]
During the 1st century BCE, the child of a prostitute Vesta and her client Akakios was named Oidipous.[2]
Trivia
- In Assassin's Creed: Odyssey, the story of Oedipous is retold with the story of Supideo in Lokris, albeit with a twist.[3]
- The mural depicting the Sphinx and Oedipous in Assassin's Creed: Odyssey is based on a painting on a stamnos from the 5th century BCE.
