| This article is about the city. You may be looking for the island or the other Choras. |
Naxos (Greek: Νάξος), also called Chora, is the largest city of Naxos Island, Greece. In classical antiquity it was a polis located in the region of Ariadne's Fate.
Among its landmarks, Naxos boasted a temple dedicated to Dionysos to ensure the fertility of vines and first-rate wine production on the island.
During the Peloponnesian War, the Spartan misthios Kassandra was led to the city by Aspasia, in search of Kassandra's mother Myrrine.[1]
Trivia
- Chora (χώρα) is a Greek word which simply means 'town'. It is often used as the name of the main town on an island, following the common practice in Greece when the name of the island itself is the same as the name of the principal town.
