The Mu Us Tribe was a Xiongnu tribe under the leadership of Modu. One of its sites of encampment was the Mu Us Village in the desert by the same name north of the Great Wall as it stood at the time of the Qin dynasty.
History
In 215 BCE, Modu's father, Touman Chanyu, sent him away as a political hostage to the Qin to not only broker peace but also to install his younger brother as heir. However, Modu was freed from imprisonment in Yangzhou by a youxia in exchange for his acting as their contact with the Xiongnu. Modu promised the youxia and their companion Yu Ying that he would first locate his tribe then rendezvous with them at Mu Us Village to return their favour. Although the two youxia were suspicious that he would bother to meet back with them after returning to his tribe, he convinced them that they would never catch up to his roaming tribe if they followed him on his search.[1]
The youxia who had rescued him went ahead to Mu Us Village to wait for him. By chance, his tribe was actually settled in that very village at the moment, so the youxia proceeded right away on their investigation by questioning Xiongnu around the market. Not all of the Xiongnu were pleased by their presence, and one of them pickpocketed them and lured them into a fight with his older brother, a warrior named Huyan Xiong. When the youxia defeated Huyan Xiong, the other Xiongnu were outraged and further violence was only averted thanks to the sudden arrival of Modu, who only then revealed his position to the youxia along with his rebellion against his father.[1]
