Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev (born 2 March 1931) is a former Soviet statesman, having served as General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union from 1985 until 1991, and as the last head of state of the Soviet Union, having served from 1988 until its dissolution in 1991.
When Abstergo Industries realized that Gorbachev had no interest in supporting their goals, the company manipulated British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher into encouraging the Boris Yeltsin's intentions to overthrow Gorbachev as leader of the Soviet Union. Yeltsin incited riots during Gorbachev's absence on holiday, causing him to lose popularity and ultimately paving the way for Yeltsin's opportunity to unseat him. In December 1991, Gorbachev was deposed and Yeltsin became the first President of Russia.
