Mead is an alcoholic beverage made by fermenting honey with water and often flavored to taste with spices, fruits, or grains such as wheat.

History

During the Isu Era, the Æsir Odin sought to save himself and the other Asgardians from the impending Great Catastrophe.[1] Upon learning that the jötunn in Jötunheimr had perfected a drink referred to as "the mead" which could preserve a being's consciousness, he schemed to take it under the pretenses of a diplomatic alliance.[2]

By the 9th century CE, mead was a common drink brewed by Norsefolk and Anglo-Saxons, and was widely consumed across both Norway and the Heptarchy in England. The Viking shieldmaiden Eivor Varinsdottir of the Raven Clan was known to regularly partake in drinking competitions with challengers in both nations in order to see who could drink the greater quantity faster than an opponent, or to test whether she could successfully complete various tasks when intoxicated or drunk.[3]
