Mared (died 824) was a Welsh mercenary hired by Master Assassin Fuladh Al Haami of the Hidden Ones.
Biography
Recruited by Fuladh, Mared was hired to be part of a group to take part in stealing an artifact from a group called the Martyrs of Agaunum. Awaiting their employer, she joined a meeting at a meeting in Fustat. While discussing their mission, she interrupted Fuladh and also grew closer to Dias, a blackmailed Roman soldier-turned-pirate. Aside from the young thief Roshan, Mared and the other mercenaries instantly grabbed their choice of weapons and equipment given to them by their employer.[1] Beating the rest, she took the sword for herself before joining back with Dias. After the group compiled their items, they all journeyed to the Sinai border to find the Martyrs.[2]
Whilst traveling, Mared rode with Dias while she hunted down hares for her fellow group members. At the passage where the Martyrs were to cross, Mared took Dias alongside the other members to wait for the Martyrs. Meanwhile, the Chinese bombmaker Wei awaited a signal from the Christian missionary Francis to activate his explosives, with Azadeh and her wolf Onyx keeping Wei company. However, the explosion was mistimed and the ambush failed.[2] While half of the assault was stunned from the explosion, Mared, Dias, and the Viking brothers Geir and Gud fought against both the Martyrs and their guards.[3]
Death
Despite Mared barely holding her own against two guards, she came to Dias' aid when he called for help. Surrounded, Dias suddenly grabbed Mared and began to passionately kiss her. However, this distraction was enough time for their assailants to loose six arrows into Mared, fatally wounding her. Before Mared died, Dias told her that "love is pain" before shoving her body off him. When the team regrouped after the Martyrs fled, the Samoan warrior Nafanua confronted Dias, dragging Mared's body towards him. After accusing him of killing her, a divide occurred within the group; Wei and Francis initially stood aside before joining the women. Nevertheless, putting their differences aside, they moved forward to track the Martyrs by water while leaving Mared's body behind.[3]
