Maps are used to help the Altaïr move about the cities, and plan his assassinations and investigations. It acts as a compromise to Altaïr's memory and sense of direction for the player. With every view point you have successfully climbed, more areas will appear on your map which reveal certain parts of your investigation, which you can recognize by it's symbol. They will also reveal locations of citizens you can save from soldiers.
