Behind the scenes
Despite its common sounding name and generic description, the spear may be a reference to the Gáe Assail, Lugh's mythical spear which allegedly could return to the wielder once thrown and was said to have lightning powers like the spear Gae Bolg used by his son Cú Chulainn.
