Liège is a major city and municipality in Belgium.

As Enlightenment ideals spread to Liège during the late 18th century, rebels deposed the city's prince bishop, César-Constantin-François de Hoensbroeck, who served the Habsburgs and the Holy Roman Empire, in the Liège Revolution, which occurred simultaneously with the French Revolution.

Shortly after the Liège Republic was founded however, the armies of Hoensbroeck and his allies retook the city and exiled most of the rebels to France, although French Revolutionary forces eventually annexed the city and put an end to its Habsburg rule.
