When Ezio first arrived in Rome in 1500 he carried no other weapon other than a single hidden blade. Destroying the Borgia towers allowed Ezio to upgrade his own equipment as shops re-opened and factions were re-established. As the city began to improve, Ezio could make improvements to his weaponary, armor, medicine and other supplies. The Liberation of Rome was an event taking place in the Italian Renaissance in which the city of Rome was liberated from the rule of the Borgia by the Assassins and was brought into the Renaissance.

In 1500, the Master Assassin Ezio Auditore travelled to Rome to once more seek revenge on the Borgia. Rome, under the ruling influence of the Borgia, became decrepit, decaying under oppression and corruption. The people were starving, scared and feared for their lives. Ezio needed to make the people believe again. His mission was not just about destroying the Borgias - it was, more importantly, bringing the ideas and beliefs of the Renaissance to Rome.

Recruiting the rebels

Upon arriving in Rome, Ezio and Niccolò Machiavelli, another Master Assassin, began renovating Tiber Island and made it the center of their operation. Ezio knew he was going to need help if he was to defeat the Borgia. He began saving rebellious citizens who were being bullied by Borgia guards. After being rescued, they swore their allegiance to Ezio and joined the Assassin cause. Ezio then sent them to Niccolò Machiavelli, where they would train to become Assassins themselves.

The Borgia influence

Rome was under the iron fist of the Borgia. The people were scared, living miserably and were being constantly bullied by Papal guards as well as the occasional highwayman and bandit. The Borgia kept control over the five districts in Rome using towers, which were guarded by individual leaders and groups of guards. The towers prevented shops from re-opening and kept the districts dull and decrepit. There was a strong military presence in Rome, as the Borgia had the Papal armies at their command. Papal guards constantly bullied and harassed the people, scaring and terrifying them into submission. Rome under the Borgia's was a police state, and the citizens of Rome had begun to lose all hope.

Liberation

A Borgia tower collapsing.

Ezio started with the Borgia towers. In order to free the districts, the towers had to fall. First, Ezio would find the tower leader, dispatch him and make his way to the top of the tower and destroy it using barrels of gunpowder conveniently stored up there. With each tower destroyed, shops started to re-open, flaccid and grey buildings became flourishing homes, crime was reduced and less Papal guards occupied the districts. The city's streets and renovations improved, and the citizens also changed, as beggars and addicts became artists and merchants. Ezio began to recruit more and more apprentices with each tower destroyed. Borgia flags were also scattered across Rome to show that the Borgia controlled that area. As Ezio collected the flags, the Borgia lost more of their control over the people. Rome began to change and rebuild and the people grew more confident that the Borgia had less and less control over their lives.

1500

In January of 1500 Ezio had woken up in a small house in Rome with his shot wounds bandaged up. The woman who nursed Ezio back to health told him that Niccolo Machiavelli had saved him from to roadside and wished to meet him, Niccolo also left Ezio a new Hidden Blade and a new assassin outfit. Once Ezio left the small house he was in desperate need of a doctor as he was unable to climb bulidings or free run until his wounds were properly taken care of, once Ezio found a Doctor he asked for the wound to be healed but the doctor told Ezio that it would have to heal over time instead and then provided Ezio with some medicine.

After being properly being treated by the doctor Ezio overheard some Borgia guards that were going to punish a innocent citizen for his supposed crime, Ezio decided that Machiavelli could wait and decided to follow the guards. When the guards eventually reached their destination, with Ezio still following them, they all attacked the man, Ezio who had come to the rescue, aided the man and killed of all the Boriga guards. Ezio then noticed the man he saved was mouring over a hanged woman, Ezio came to comfort the man by saying his dead wife was beautiful, the husband of the dead woman told Ezio that Il Carnefice forced himself on her and then killed his beloved wife afterwards and if he cut her down to give her a proper funeral he would execute him too. Ezio, wanting to bring justice, infiltrated Il Carnefice's cliffside plazzo and assassinated him from above.

With Il Carnefice put to an end Ezio decided to finally meet up with Machiavelli at the given location. When Ezio confronted Niccolo he seemed surprised that Ezio was still alive after he rescued him, but Ezio and Machiavelli moved on to discuss more important things. As the two men walked through the decaying streets of Rome they discussed how Rome had become a corrupt and decrepit under the Borgia influence and Cesare Borgia's rise to power and plan to take control of Italy. After a brief dicussion about the people of Rome Ezio was robed by a thief who tried to flee the scene after he robed Ezio, tracking the thief down and liberating his money back Ezio rejoined Machiavelli where they were both on their way to meet up with one of Niccolo's contacts to gain a stolen letter. After a small fight with some Borgia guards Machiavelli's associate told them that the Borgia courier held the letter instead, with a brief chase, Ezio seized the letter and took it to the location mentioned on the letter.

Ezio, who taken the letter to the given location, was suddenly ambushed by mysterious brutes dressed in wolf skins, Ezio was able to over power all twelve of his attackers but was left confused with who these men were. After a scouting around the area Ezio found a small passage leading underground and assumed his attackers came from there. Exploring the ancient underground palace Ezio soon found a way to return back to Rome, but discovered a small chest which contained a scroll, believing this to be of value Ezio took the scroll with him.

Returning to the surface Machiavelli greeted Ezio and then identified these mysterious men as a cult known a the Sons of Romulus, which he believed to be working with the Borgia by scaring the citizens into submission to the church. Ezio and Niccolo finally made their way to Tiber Island were it was decided to be their new center of operation.

1502

In 1502 Leonardo Da Vinci was forced into the service of Cesare Borgia himself as a military engineer and architect, against his own will. When Leonardo and Ezio reunited in Rome the same year, Leonardo told Ezio of his forced services and that he was made to build war machines like the armoured car, chariot machine gun, a more advanced Flying Machine, and "other monstrosities besides". Ezio set out to destroy these machines at once, starting with the armoured car in Monte Circeo where the tank was being developed. After stealthily makin

g his way into the factory then interrogating the engineer and burning copies of the designs, he freed captured soldiers and found the machine, escaping the area and using it to destroy the military base where it was being developed. After Ezio's success in Monte Circeo, he decided to destroy the deadly war machine.

Ezio also stole the advanced flying machine or "bomber" from another Borgia military base. Later Ezio destroyed the flying machine.

Ezio also highjacked the chariot machine gun while it was being driven through the countryside, after Ezio dispatched the guards who gave chase with the machine gun itself. Towards the end of the memory sequence, Ezio detaches the gunpowder-laden Chariot from the saddle-bar attached to the horses and shoots it with the Hidden Gun, resulting in the explosion of Ezio's chasers whilst Ezio "surfs" the horse bar momentarily before hopping onto the back of one of the horses.

1503

By the year 1503 Ezio had nearly liberated Rome from the Borgia rule. Ezio had already destroyed all the Borgia towers that conquered the cities districts and all the shops had been re-opened and renovated too. Ezio also recruited many more Apprentices to aid him. By this time Ezio assassinated all of Cesare Borgia's generals, including the Duke de Valois, Octavien, Cesare's personal banker Juan Borgia and his personal assassin Micheletto. With Rome almost free of the Borgia influence Ezio was ready to face Cesare and his father, Pope Rodrigo Borgia. At some point in 1503 Cesare and Rodrigo Borgia paraded through Rome in Papal parades, as Ezio finally faced Cesare and Rodrigo together. Ezio and his Apprentices fought against Cesare and his Papal guards.

On 18 August 1503, Rodrigo Borgia died. With his death Rome was fully liberated of the Borgia rule.

Aftermath

Rome was fully liberated from the Borgia's rule after Rodrigo's death. Following the death of his father, and his family's subsequent fall from grace, Cesare Borgia was soon arrested by the new Pope, Pius III. In 1504 Cesare Borgia was exiled to Spain and was imprisoned in the Castle of La Mota, from which he escaped and joined King John III of Navarre, his brother-in-law. By 1507, four years after Rome's liberation of the Borgia, the Siege of Viana in Spain took place, this is presumably the first time Ezio and Cesare saw each other since Rome's liberation in 1503. Viana was also where in real-life history, Cesare was killed and buried.
