Leo III (750 – 816) was Bishop of Rome from 26 December 795 to his death in 816.

Admist the growing tensions between the Catholic Church in Rome and the rising power of the Eastern Orthodox Church in Constantinople, Leo III was crowned by as Bishop of Rome by the bishops in the Papal States,[1] formed with gifted lands by the Frankish king Pepin the Short, who had protected the papacy against the Lombards in the past decades.[2]

On Christmas Day in 800, Leo crowned a reluctant Charlemagne, Pepin's son, as Emperor of the Romans, a move which cemented the split of power within Christiandom between the East and West.[1]
