Kiyomizudera Temple is a Buddhist temple in the eastern Kyoto, Japan, dedicated to Kannon.[1] At the time of the Sengoku period, the temple was located at the city's outskirts within the Province of Yamashiro.[2]
History
Kiyomizudera was founded and established in 778 by a Enchin Shonin, a priest from Nara was said to have received a vision telling him construct the temple next to the spring.[1] In 1582, the samurai Ujimasa, who formerly served as a castle guard of Yamazaki, took shelter at the temple to hide from the forces of Ise Sadaoki. Becoming a monk, he was visited by the Iga kunoichi Fujibayashi Naoe and samurai Yasuke, who sought his help to gain entry into Yamazaki Castle.[3]
Around the same time, Naoe also explored the temple to collect lost pages to increase her knowledge.[2]
