Kephalos was a figure in Greek mythology, said to be the founder of the line of Odysseus. He was also the husband of Prokris. The island of Kephallonia was named after him.
Biography
According to legends, Kephalos wielded a spear which was said to be given to him by the gods. On one occasion while hunting, Kephalos mistook Prokris as an animal in the bushes and threw his spear, killing her. Driven with guilt and shame, Kephalos hid the spear in a cave on the island.[1]
Another story said that Kephalos had given Prokris a necklace. The piece of jewelry went missing, however, and was later located within the sunken ruins of a temple, off Kephallonia's coast, guarded by sharks. In 431 BCE, a vegetable seller and his wife asked the misthios Kassandra to fetch the necklace for them.[2]
