Initially working as just a theatre actor he later came to prominence in dramatic leading roles during the 1980s in films like The French Lieutenant's Woman, The Mission, and Dead Ringers, he subsequently became popular during the 1990s with villainous roles in the blockbusters The Lion King and Die Hard with a Vengeance.[1]

He married Irish actress Sinéad Cusack on 28 March 1978.[6] They have two sons, Samuel "Sam" Irons (born 1978), who works as a photographer, and Maximilian "Max" Irons (born 1985), also an actor.
