imported>Sol Pacificus Jamestown is most famous for being the first successful settlement of the English, esp. in the context of Roanoke, so I thought this was an important fact to be noted. Btw, Wikipedia says that it ceased to exist by 1699, which is before both the establishment of the UK and the US, so it can't be categorized as a U.S. city. |

Jamestown was the first enduring settlement of the English in the Americas.[1]
History[edit | edit source]
Founded in 1607, Jamestown served as the foundation for the Colony of Virginia,[1] which later became one of the founding thirteen United States of America.[2] The colony was preceded by multiple failed English attempts, most notably the Roanoke Colony that vanished within five years of its establishment.[3][4]
In the early 18th century, Welsh pirate Edward Kenway sent tobacco crates to Jamestown's old port to make some easy money from the old sailors stationed there, as well as to discuss new trading opportunities.[5]
