Islam is a monotheistic religion which originated in Arabia and is dominant in the Middle East, South Asia, and North Africa. Its adherents are commonly known as Muslims, [citation needed] but during the Crusades, they were also conventionally called Saracens by their Christian enemies.[1] To the Spaniards during the Reconquista, they were often referred to as Moors and conflated with Arabs and African peoples alike.[2]

Mosques, which are places of worship for this faith, are prominent features in cities which have historically boasted a prominent Islamic presence or which have been influenced by Islamic culture.[1][3]
