Hypermnestra was one of the 50 daughters of Danaos called Danaides, and the mother of the Abantiad Dynasty of Argive kings in Greek mythology.
According to the stories, Hypermnestra and her sisters were supposed to marry their uncle Aigyptos' 50 sons. As a wedding present from their father, each of Danaos' daughters received a dagger, and a command to kill their husbands. All but Hypermnestra obeyed. A memorial shrine for the 49 slain sons was set up in Argos, Argolis.[1]
In 5th century BCE, a camp of the Daughters of Artemis within the Palace of Agamemnon region in Argolis was named after Hypermnestra. During the Peloponnesian War the Spartan misthios Kassandra infiltrated the camp, killing the lead huntress and claiming the Daughters' valuables.[2]
