Hoplites were citizen-soldiers of the Spartan army in the ancient Greek world.
Usually armed with a spear and a shield, the Hoplites were not professional soldiers, but free citizens of the poleis. They were considered the backbone of armies like Athens'. Unlike in Athens, in Sparta even 'non-citizens' like the perioikoi and the helots could gain the rank of a hoplite.[1]
