Hippolytos was the son of Theseus in Greek mythology.

Biography

When Hippolytos learned that his stepmother and Theseus' second wife, Phaidra, was in love with him, he refused to reciprocate the feelings. Hurt by his rebuff, Phaidra told Theseus that Hippolytos had violated her, and in his anger, Theseus condemned his son to die. Theseus had the god Poseidon bring forth a sea monster, and Hippolytos crashed in his chariot, dying.[1]

Legacy

In 5th century BCE Athens had a cenotaph erected in Hippolytos' memory.[2]

Within the Sinkholes of Herakles in Argolis were the remains of Hippolytos' chariot. The Spartan misthios Kassandra visited these both landmarks during the Peloponnesian War.[3]
