Hippolyta was the Queen of the Amazons and the daughter of Ares in Greek mythology.

History

Hippolyta was said to have been gifted a girdle by Ares, signifying her authority as the queen of the Amazons. During the Peloponnesian War, the Spartan misthios Kassandra recovered a belt bearing that honor.[1]

When the legendary hero Theseus ultimately defeated Hippolyta, she died of grief. In her honour, a monument was raised on a cliff in the Valley of King Lelex, overlooking Megara.[1]
