Hippolyta was the daughter of Ares and the Queen of the Amazons in Greek mythology.
History
Hippolyta was said to have been gifted a girdle by Ares, signifying her authority as the queen of the Amazons. During the Peloponnesian War the Spartan misthios Kassandra recovered a belt bearing that honor.[1]
When the legendary hero Theseus ultimately defeated Hippolyta, she died of grief. In her honour, a monument was raised in the Valley of King Lelex in Megaris.[1]
