Heron covers a number of freshwater and coastal subspecies of the family Ardeidae. Typified by their long necks, long legs, and tapering beaks, a number of heron species are also commonly white in plumage.
History
Inhabiting the wetlands throughout Greece, the herons were a common sight during the Peloponnesian War.[1]
In Egypt of the 1st century BCE, the herons were also common. Unlike in Greece, the birds were revered by the Egyptians, especially Siwans, like the Medjay Bayek. The feathers of the birds were used in burial rituals, for they were believed to guide the spirits of the dead in their afterlife journey through the Duat.[2] For this reason, heron feathers were in demand in Egyptian markets as late as 48 BCE.
In the mid-1st century BCE, the nomarch Rudjek bore the cryptonym "the Heron", as a member of the Order of the Ancients.[3]
