Henri Marchand was a French slave on Saint-Domingue. While the Code Noir prohibited it, Henri had received an education and was one of the few literate slaves on the island.
In 1735, he was sent with two other slaves – Joachim François and Fortunée Jean – to participate in the French Geodesic Mission by the Assassin Adéwalé, in order to spy on the French and pass on the knowledge they gained to the Assassins and the Maroons.
