The Captain Guard (died 1497) was the leader of the Florentine guards, and in 1497, Girolamo Savonarola managed to gain his services as one of his lieutenants by promising him power. He was killed by the Assassin Ezio Auditore da Firenze in the same year, in order to weaken Savonarola's power in Florence.
Biography
Rise to power
Sometime between 1494 and 1497, the Captain Guard became one of Savonarola's lieutenants. Each lieutenant had the duty to make sure the citizens of Florence would refrain from starting riots. The Captain Guard lurked with his guards in the courtyard of the Basilica di San Lorenzo - the final resting place of several members of the Medici family - and ambushed and killed any Medici sympathizers who came to the Basilica.
