A Green Sea Turtle in the Aegean Sea

The Green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas) is an endangered species of sea turtle.

Living in tropical and sub-tropical seas across the globe, Green sea turtles were plentiful within Mediterranean and Aegean Seas during the time of ancient Greece. The 5th century BCE Spartan misthios Kassandra encountered these turtles often when diving underwater. They were very skittish and would scurry away when she approached them.[1]

Later, in the 18th century CE, the renowned pirate Edward Kenway encountered several green sea turtles crawling on the beaches of islands in the Caribbean. Though it was possible to kill them, they didn't drop anything useful for trade.[2]
