Goldborough, originally Goldness, was a Viking settlement near Whitby Abbey in England.

History

In 820 CE, Rig Reidarasson became enamored with the golden finery and the work he saw at Whitby Abbey's scriptorium during a raid and wished to settle near the abbey. At the site of an ancient Roman outpost, he settled with his warriors and founded the town of Goldness, which would later become Goldborough.[1] As the ruler of Goldness, Rig was instrumental in defending the settlement from attacks from rival kingdoms.[2][3]
