A view of the Garden of Kynosarges

The Garden of Kynosarges was a garden attributed to the hero Didymos, located outside of Athens in Attika, Greece.

History

When Didymos was about to perform a sacrifice to the god Dionysos, a white dog snatched the sacrificial animal from him. He went on to create a garden in honor of the dog's swiftness and cunning.[1]

During the Peloponnesian War, the Spartan misthios Kassandra visited the place.[2]

Behind the scenes

Instead of dog statues, the garden features multiple statues of lions. A statue of a young man, based on a statue of Alexander the Great stands in the garden as well.

Historically, Didymos was said to have built a temple in honor of the hero Herakles, his mother Alkmene and his nephew Iolaos.

The name of the place gave birth to the story, explaining it as κῠνός ἀργός (kunós argós) meaning 'swift dog'.
