Pizzaro arrived in Peru in late 1532 with a small band of fellow conquistadors, ostensibly to find gold. In mid-November of that year, Pizzaro and his men arrived at the outskirts of the Incan city of Cajamarca.

After being rebuked trying to be diplomatic with the Inca Emperor Atahualpa, who was staying in the city, Pizzaro decided to attack the Incas the next day. His ambush was a devastating success; the Incas were mostly Atahualpa's courtiers and officials as well as civilians who carried no weapons, and the soldiers that were there were completely unarmed. Pizzaro captured Atahualpa, after which he ordered the former Emperor strangled to death.
