Sir Francis Drake (c. 1540 – 1596) was an English privateer and navigator during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. He carried out the second circumnavigation of the world from 1577 to 1580. While he was revered as a hero in England for his exploits against the Spanish Empire, Drake became known as a pirate among the Spanish.
