The Fourth Crusade was an attempt by the western European Crusaders to conquer Jerusalem, which was under the control of the Muslims. However, instead of Jerusalem, the Crusaders sacked the capital of the Byzantine Empire, Constantinople.
Due to the chaos caused by the Fourth Crusade, the Mentor of the Levantine Assassin Brotherhood Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad was forced to cut his stay in Constantinople short to return to Masyaf, initially hoping to spread the Assassin ideology to the Byzantine Empire.
