Fortunée Jean was a slave of French origins on the island of Saint-Domingue. She was one of the few literate slaves on the island, despite the Code Noir prohibiting slaves from receiving an education. On the orders of the Assassin Adéwalé, she and two other slaves – Henri Marchand and Joachim François – were sent on the French Geodesic Mission of Louis Godin, so that they could pass the gained knowledge on to the Assassins and Maroons whenever they could.
