The Escudo was the main currency of the Spanish Empire. It was used in the West Indies during the 18th century. A single escudo was worth several reales.

When the Assassin Duncan Walpole shipwrecked on Cape Bonavista along with the pirate Edward Kenway, he offered the pirate 100 escudos to help him get to Havana.[1]
