Elmet Monastery

Elmet Monastery was a former Anglo-Saxon monastery, overrun by Picts, in western Eurvicscire, England.

History[edit | edit source]

Around 876, the Viking Eivor Varinsdottir met with Halfdan Ragnarsson's close friend and advisor, Faravid at his camp in Alortun. There, they discussed how Elmet Monastery was recently inhabited by the Picts for raiding.[1]

Throughout her journey in Eurvicscire, Eivor conducted a raid on the monastery and claimed its riches with her crew from her longship.[2]

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

The name of the monastery may be a reference to the Britonnic kingdom of Elmet, which existed between the 5th and early 7th century in the area around Yorkshire.
