Abū Muḥammad ʿAlī ibn Aḥmad (877/878 – 908), better known by his regnal name al-Muktafi, was the seventeenth Caliph of the Abbasid Empire, ruling from 902 to 908.
During his reign, al-Muktafi completed the construction of Taj Palace,[1] including among its buildings a semicircular tower in the southwestern corner of the palace. The Dome of the Ass, as it was called, was fitted with a spiral stair such that al-Muktafi could ride to the top on a donkey and from there gaze on the surrounding countryside.[2]
