Abū ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Manṣūr (744/745 – 785), better known by his regnal name al-Mahdi, was the third Caliph of the Abbasid Empire, ruling from 775 until his death in 785.

Upon his succession to caliph,[1] al-Mahdi freed and elevated concubine al-Khayzuran to the status of a legal wife. After his death, al-Khayzuran acted as the Caliphate's de facto ruler,[2] and she would maintain great influence during the reigns of her sons al-Hadi and Harun al-Rashid.[1]
