Ducat (pl. ducati, ducats) was one of the main trade currencies used in Europe from the 13th to 20th century.

During the Renaissance in Italy, the ducat was used as the default currency for anything and everything. Of special note were the ducats used in Venice; the Assassin Giovanni Auditore da Firenze found Venetian ducats on the corpse of Giovanni Andrea Lampugnani following the assassination of Galeazzo Maria Sforza, the duke of Milan. This led Giovanni Auditore to the trail of the Templar Rodrigo Borgia.[1]
