Abu'l-Fath Jalal ud-din Muhammad Akbar, popularly known as Akbar (1542 – 1605), also known as Akbar I or Akbar the Great, was the emperor of the Mughal Empire from 1556 until his death. Under his rule, the Mughal Empire tripled in size and wealth.

In 1561, Akbar began an aggressive campaign to destroy the Rajputs. By 1576, Mewar was one of the only areas in the region of Rajasthan not under Mughal control. In June of that year, Akbar's army fought against the forces of the Rajput chief Pratap Singh in the Battle of Gogunda. Although Pratap Singh's forces mounted an impressive ambush on the Mughals, Akbar's army emerged victorious.[1]

Despite Pratap Singh's defeat, the Rajput chief continued his resistance, refusing to recognize Mughal rule until several years after.[1]
