The only serious and successful effort to eradicate the republic of pirates came in 1718 from Woodes Rogers, a British officer who had been appointed governor of the Bahamas. The British conceived a series of measures to eliminate piracy from the region. Rogers devoted himself to crackdown on Nassau and was ultimately able to capture many pirates and execute them.
His efforts resulted in the end of the pirate haven at New Providence. Although Nassau was probably not a pirate paradise as some have claimed, the presence of a powerful pirate base threatened the activities of the European nation-states in the Western Hemisphere to such an extent that they put the necessary resources into annihilating the republic of pirates.
