Inns and taverns were central to colonial life. In addition to being a place where people would meet around a meal, drink a few ales, or discuss important matters for the community, they were stations for travellers - offering a roof, a warm bed or a clean floor, a hot meal and often care for one's horse - which is nice, because you wouldn't want your horse to feel left out.
Innkeepers were important figures both locally and regionally, because they dealt with a great many people, from humble labourers to campaigning Generals. This made them a prime source of news: any innkeeper worth their salt knew everyone for miles around their inn, and they generally made sure everyone knew them, too.
