The Agiad dynasty was an ancient Greek dynasty which ruled the ancient city-state of Sparta in Ancient Greece. Along the Eurypontids, the Agiads claim descent from the legendary hero Herakles and ruled the city from the Dark Ages until the Hellenistic period

In the 5th century BCE, the Agiad dynasty saw a prominent involvement in the Greco-Persian Wars. King Leonidas fought to his last breath at the Battle of Thermopylae against the Persian Empire. His grandaughter Kassandra was a prominent misthios during the Peloponnesian War, working for both the Peloponnesian League and the Delian League.[1]
