The Afon Blockade

The Afon Blockade was a Saxon-guarded blockade that was located on the Afon River in northwestern Hamtunscire.

History

Viking Age

In 878, the last leader of the Sons of Ragnar Ubba Ragnarsson and his men were stationed south of the blockade, waiting for Guthrum's order to attack. However, they were soon ambushed and killed by Lord Odda under Alfred's orders.[1] Jarlskona Eivor Varinsdottir of the Raven Clan searched the area and found her dead ally, along with evidence of Alfred and Reeve Goodwin's parts in Ubba's death.[2]

In the 870s, Eivor ventured towards the blockade and destroyed the chain, allowing any ship to pass on the river.[3]
