Aella (Old English: Ælla; died 867) was King of Northumbria until his death in 867. He was responsible for capturing the Viking leader Ragnar Lodbrok and had him put to death.[1] In retaliation, two of Ragnar's sons, Ivarr the Boneless and Ubba Ragnarsson, sought revenge and invaded England leading the Great Heathen Army. In time, the sons captured Aella and ritually executed him by way of the blood eagle.[2]
