It was especially suited to blocking projectiles while its blood red coloration inspired ferocity. By 48 BCE, the shield had evidently been a bit worn from its years in combat, with its circular shape slightly distorted, yet it was no less sturdy.
History
Once the personal shield of a prince from Aegae, hence its name, the Aegean Prince had made its way to Egypt by 48 BCE during the reign of the Ptolemy XIII of the Ptolemaic dynasty.
