The church of Santa Maria Assunta (English: Assumption of Mary, literally Saint Mary's Assumption) was the name of the main church in San Gimignano, Tuscany, Italy.
Database Entry
Referred to as the Duomo by locals, even through it doesn't deserve the title because the town has no bishop, Santa Maria Assunta was built in the 12th Century. Shockingly, it has no tower, although in San Gimignano, the City of Towers, such an act of celibacy coming from a church was probably a smart move.[1]
Trivia
- San Gimignano did once have its own bishop.[2]
- Santa Maria Assunta shares its name with many churches,[3] including one in real-life Monteriggioni. [citation needed]
