Pope Clement VIII (24 February 1536 – 3 March 1605), born Ippolito Aldobrandini, was Pope from 1592 to his death.
In 1598, all of Rome's money was heading into Clement's execution fund. As a result, when a flood swept away the eastern arch of the Ponte Emilio, city officials deemed it too expensive to fix.[1]
