Chippenham (Old English: Cippanhamm) is a village and the county town of Hamtunscire, England. During 878, the Battle of Chippenham took place in its very village, where the Vikings of the Great Heathen Army led by Guthrum won a victory over Alfred the Great's forces of Wessex. King Alfred retreated and hid from the public eye for a time as a result,[1] taking refuge with a farmer couple in the village of Athelnay.[2]
